Las Chafiras on the Move

🚏 Major Upgrades Begin for Bus Stops in Las Chafiras and Oroteanda

Improving Accessibility, Comfort, and Connectivity in Southern Tenerife

Construction is now officially underway on brand-new bus stops in the busy areas of Las Chafiras and Oroteanda, located in the municipality of San Miguel de Abona. These upgrades are part of a larger infrastructure initiative aimed at significantly enhancing TITSA bus services, easing daily commutes, and improving pedestrian accessibility — especially for those traveling from the Las Chafiras Industrial Estate via the Gomero roundabout.

🏗️ A Strategic Public Transport Investment

This initiative is being carried out under the umbrella of a broader regional mobility improvement program, led by the Government of the Canary Islands.

🔹 Total investment: Over €40,000
🔹 Location: Left-hand side of the TF-652 road, which serves as a key connector between Las Chafiras and Las Galletas.

This stretch of road has long needed improvement — particularly on the left side, where no modern bus stop existed, leading to accessibility challenges for both pedestrians and commuters.

💬 What the Local Government Is Saying

According to Eulalia García, the Councillor for Mobility, the bus stop construction is part of a long-term plan to reinforce connections between Las Chafiras and Oroteanda, areas that have been undergoing significant roadworks for nearly three years.

“While the stop on the right side of the road was completed earlier, the lack of a proper stop on the opposite side has created imbalances in service. This new construction will not only solve those issues but elevate the overall commuting experience,” she explained.

🚶 What Will the New Bus Stop Include?

The revamped infrastructure is designed with user comfort, safety, and accessibility in mind. Here’s what passengers can expect:

✅ Features of the New Bus Stop:

  • A raised platform for easy boarding and disembarking
  • Modern seating and leaning bars for waiting passengers
  • Shelters to protect users from sun and rain
  • Tactile warning strips for the visually impaired
  • Upgraded pedestrian crossings
  • Seamless integration with the existing pavement network

These elements aim to make the area not only more accessible for residents and tourists, but also more functional for the hundreds of workers who travel daily to the Las Chafiras Industrial Estate.

🧭 Bridging a Service Gap

Previously, the absence of a left-side stop on this stretch of the TF-652 created a notable gap in the TITSA network. Commuters had to navigate inconvenient detours or unsafe crossings just to reach the nearest service point.

By establishing this new stop and fully integrating it with existing pedestrian infrastructure, the project seeks to fill that void and make public transport a more viable option for many in the community.

🏝️ A Broader Commitment to Mobility in Tenerife

This project is just one part of a much wider push by the Tenerife Cabildo to modernize public transport facilities across the island.

📍 In 2025 alone, the Cabildo has earmarked €1.8 million to:

  • Maintain and upgrade existing bus infrastructure
  • Improve stop accessibility island-wide
  • Expand service availability, especially in high-traffic areas

Among the standout improvements are upgrades to the El Fraile stop, which serves over 300,000 passengers annually, as well as key terminals in Los Cristianos, San Isidro, and Granadilla. These enhancements include new roofing, weatherproofing, and rainwater drainage systems, ensuring greater comfort for users year-round.

🌐 What It Means for Commuters and Residents

For people living or working in the Las Chafiras and Oroteanda areas, these improvements are more than just cosmetic. They represent a long-awaited step toward a more efficient, inclusive, and sustainable public transport network.

Whether you’re a worker commuting to the industrial zone, a student headed to school, or a tourist exploring the island’s south, these updates will mean:

✅ Shorter walking distances
✅ Safer crossings
✅ More frequent and reliable service
✅ A better waiting experience — rain or shine

🌟 In Summary:
The construction of new bus stops along the TF-652 is more than a local development — it’s a reflection of Tenerife’s island-wide mobility goals, making transport greener, smarter, and more accessible for everyone.
